About the Artwork
Klimt completed "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I" in 1907 after three years of work. The painting uses oil and gold leaf on canvas, combining realistic portraiture with abstract, decorative elements. Adele Bloch-Bauer was a prominent Viennese socialite who hosted a salon frequented by artists and intellectuals. After a long legal battle following World War II, the painting was returned to the Bloch-Bauer heirs and sold to Ronald Lauder for $135 million in 2006 -- then the highest price ever paid for a painting. It now hangs in the Neue Galerie in New York.
