About the Artwork
Henri-Edmond Cross (1856-1910) was a French Neo-Impressionist painter who worked alongside Signac and admired Seurat. "The Pink Cloud" was painted around 1896 and shows the southern French coast in a haze of warm pinks, blues, and greens. Cross applied paint in distinct dabs of color that blend optically at a distance -- a technique called Divisionism. His work directly influenced Matisse and the Fauves, making him a important but often overlooked link between Impressionism and modern art.
