About the Artwork
"The Great Wave off Kanagawa" is part of Hokusai's series "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji." Despite the wave dominating the composition, the true subject is Fuji itself -- constant and unmoved by the chaos of the sea. Hokusai was around 70 years old when he made this print, using Prussian blue pigment that had recently been imported to Japan from Europe. The image influenced Impressionist painters in France, came full circle to inspire Japanese modernists, and remains one of the most reproduced artworks on earth.
Who Is This For
Ocean lovers, Japanese art fans, and anyone who has been drawn to this image since seeing it for the first time. The blue and white palette is clean and works with practically any outfit.
