Painting the Ancient Land of Australia

A painter’s journey across the Australian landscape

Painting the Ancient Land of Australia follows artist Philip Hughes across Australia, from Karijini to Fraser Island, Tasmania, and the Kimberley. Inspired by maps and aerial photographs, Hughes captures both natural landscapes and human impact through bold graphics and expressive blocks of color.

Featuring three decades of work, from delicate sketches to large-scale paintings, the book offers a personal and visually striking exploration of Australia’s diverse landscapes and ecological contrasts.
