About the Artwork

Van Gogh painted two series of sunflowers -- one in Paris, one in Arles. The Arles series, painted in August 1888, is the famous one. He used chrome yellow, a relatively new pigment at the time, to create variations of gold and amber. Each sunflower is in a different state: budding, blooming, wilting. The whole cycle of life in a single vase. The series became so central to Van Gogh's identity that Gauguin later painted Van Gogh in the act of painting them.
