About the Artwork
"The Starry Night" was painted in June 1889, from memory and imagination combined with the view from Van Gogh's east-facing window at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum. The swirling sky is purely his invention -- no astronomer has been able to match it to real star positions. The cypress tree in the foreground rises like a dark flame, connecting earth and sky. Despite being one of the world's most reproduced paintings, the original in MoMA still stops people in their tracks.
