Walter Gropius

A vivid biography of Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius

Fiona MacCarthy’s biography explores the life and legacy of Walter Gropius, the visionary founder of the Bauhaus and a major influence on modern design and architecture.

The book follows Gropius from his experiences in World War I and turbulent personal life to his decision to leave Nazi Germany and his later career in Britain and the United States. Challenging the image of Gropius as simply a strict modernist, MacCarthy offers an insightful and deeply human portrait of the man behind the Bauhaus.
